Climate Change FAQ

Do scientists agree on climate change? #

Yes, the vast majority of publishing scientists – 97%, agree that humans are causing global warming and climate change.

What’s the difference between climate change and global warming? #

Global warming describes the long-term warming of the planet. Global temperatures have shown a well-documented rise since the early 1900s. Climate change encompasses global warming but refers to the broader range of changes occurring to the planet. These include glaciers disappearing, sea levels rising, accelerating ice melt in Greenland, Antarctica and the Arctic. The warming is primarily caused by the burning of fossil fuels.

Why is carbon such a big problem? #

The greenhouse effect is the way heat is trapped close to the surface of the Earth by greenhouse gasses. These gases include carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxides. Removal of all of the carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and the Earth would be approximately 33 degrees (C) cooler.

Is it too late to prevent climate change? #

If we stopped emitting greenhouse gases today, the rise in global temperatures would start flattening in a few years. Temperatures would then plateau but remain elevated for several centuries. However, without major action to reduce emissions, global temperature is on track to rise by 2.5DegC to 4.5DegC by 2100, according to estimates.
